How does folic acid work in the body?

Once absorbed, folic acid is converted through several enzyme steps into 5-MTHF, the active form your cells actually use. The key enzyme in that pathway is MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). Active folate then takes part in single-carbon transfer reactions your body uses to build DNA and RNA and to help red blood cells mature correctly.

A gene variant in MTHFR, commonly called MTHFR C677T, can slow this conversion in some people. Folic acid has a long safety record at standard doses. NIH ODS sets the tolerable upper intake level for synthetic folic acid (from fortified food and supplements combined, excluding natural food folate) at 1,000 µg/day for adults, a wide margin above the dose in most standard tablets and strips.

Two caveats are worth knowing rather than worrying about: taking several multivitamins at once can push other nutrients past sensible limits, and a high folic acid intake can mask the early blood signs of a vitamin B12 deficiency.
